All Eyez On Me
A2 Screen Print on 270gsm Colorplan Ebony from GF Smith
420 x 594 mm (16.5 x 23.4 in)
A highly limited print featuring detailed hand-drawn illustrations of the one and only MC New York. Makaveli risen again. Mr Tupac Amuru Shakur. Or simply, 2Pac.
Each illustration is set alongside a lyric from one the artist’s songs that I believe is pertinent to their career and best represents them and their legacy. Each is screen printed onto 270gsm Colorplan Ebony paper which is the smoothest and blackest stock I’ve had the pleasure to work with. All are numbered, signed and hand-finished before being shipped in postal tubes along with a certificate of authenticity. I believe there is no substitute for quality and everything about these prints has been selected to showcase each element to its fullest - from my approach to the illustrations and the typography, through to the final finishing details that make these stand out so well, I have endeavoured to produce a work of art that more accurately reflects the taste and sensibilities of today’s hip-hop fans.
More than that though, I want these prints to stand as testament to the enduring and restorative power of hip-hop; without which, many of us would see the world very differently. Choosing to work in this way, from dark to light, embodies the struggle that is present in a musical art form that still, to this day, refuses to be categorised. That stands for something more than the sum of its parts. But whether it’s Boom Bap or Gangster Rap, Jazz Rap or Rap Rock, there’s always been, without fail, a spark of light in each track laid down and and every lyric spit.
This print reads:
Driven by my ambitions, desire higher positions.
So I proceed to make Gs, eternally in my mission.
Is to be more than just a rap musician.
The elevation of today’s generation.
If I could make ’em listen.
All prints are lovingly produced by hand at Squeegee and Ink - a joy-filled little screen printing studio based in Newbury, Berkshire. What I love about them isn’t just the insanely high standards they apply to their work, but also their enthusiasm and absolute dedication to their craft. That was really important to me as I was looking for printers to work with on these prints - there’s a magic that comes through in the end result when you work with people who genuinely love what they do.
As well as being fully recyclable and biodegradable, Colorplan has FSC certification, meaning that the pulps used are all from managed forests. It is also Heavy Metal Free and, because the bleaching process avoids the use of harmful chlorine, it is classified ECF. So I feel a little less guilty if nothing else.
